Welcome to Sarah Paton's Personal Page
Dear wonderful supporters and friends,
Over the weekend of October 21st and 22nd 2017, I will for the 5th time join over 1000 cyclists to go on a special 200km bike journey to celebrate the men, women and children who have survived cancer, to give courage to those who are still battling cancer and to remember those who are no longer with us.
As a fundraiser for my ride, and as an extra physical challenge for these middle aged bones, over the week of May 13th to 20th 2017, I and and 3 very special friends, plus a support team of guides and 16 porters, spent a week on the mountain and successfully summitted Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, the highest free-standing mountain the world!
Holding the Perkins flag up on the 5,895ms (19,341feet) summit at 7.28am on May 19th was one of those life changing moments, freezing (-20!!) and enormously satisfying, despite the almost complete inability to breathe!
It was the hardest challenge I have ever done, working lungs to breathe in oxygen deplete air and heavy legs to climb what we termed the "up that never ends!". A beautiful but grueling 5 days ascent and 2 days steep descent through multiple climactic zones from the rainforest of the mountain's base, through high altitude barren and rocky mountain desert, to the icy wind blasted permanently frozen glazial plateau and crater and summit.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all who have generously given over the past 5 years to my ride, this year to my mountain climb and hopefully you are able to again.
Meanwhile the mountain gear is being packed away and the lycra is out!
Thank you for your patience and good will and love and support for this most important of causes.
All donations go directly to the Perkins Institute of Medical Research and to the scientists there working on projects that aim to investigate, understand, treat and cure cancer. Every dollar helps us all go one step closer for our children's future to be free of cancer and the heartache, pain and suffering that cancer causes.
Thank you so much for helping them do what they need to do.
Sarah XX :)
